It was the high school prom. Everyone was on the dance floor dancing to the music of the band. All the girls were dressed in beautiful satin dresses and the guys were all suited up in tuxedos. But there was Amber sitting all alone watching everyone swaying to the music, and still waiting for someone who would ask her to dance. All of her friends were asked to dance but she was left alone there. She was all sad thinking she will have to dance alone in this prom night when she heard someone say, “Would you like to have this dance with me?”
Amber looked up to see a handsome boy standing in front of her. She was taken by surprise. She said, “Yes”, and he took her by the hand and ushered her to the dance floor. They were slow dancing in the middle of the floor when they introduced themselves to each other, “I’m Miles Lewis”, “I’m Amber Olsen”. Amber asked, “Are you new in school?” Miles replied, “No, I’ve been here for a long time”. “Then how come I’ve never seen you before”, said Amber.
“Boys and girls, may I have your attention please, it’s time to announce our prom King and Queen of 2007, said Mrs. Clark. with a microphone in her hand. Miles said to Amber, “I know you are going to be the prom Queen.” “Yeah right! Like that’s ever going to happen but thanks Miles, you’re very sweet”, replied Amber with a smile. “Everybody, our prom Queen of 2007 is Amber Olsen”, announced Mrs. Clark. The clamour of claps filled the hall room, Amber was ecstatic, she couldn’t believe it. She turned to look at Miles but he wasn’t there.
Amber looked for Miles after she was crowned on the stage but Miles was nowhere to be found. Amber was with Mrs. Clark, she pinned her picture with the prom king on the prom board. There were pictures of all the proms of the high school. Suddenly, a picture that Amber saw just sent a shiver down her spine. It was the prom picture of 1989. The prom king on the picture looked exactly like Miles, was it just a big coincidence that Miles and that guy looked alike. Amber curiously asked Mrs. Clark who that guy was. Mrs. Clark replied, “Oh, that’s Miles Lewis, he was such a sweet boy, it’s so sad that he died on the same night that he was crowned the prom king right here in our school”.
Amber was still dazed and confused sitting at the edge of the swimming pool of her school. Mrs. Clark’s words shook her to the core, that was the pool where Miles had drowned when some mean boys pushed him knowing that he couldn’t swim. If Miles was really dead then how could she explain this night when they danced and laughed together. Suddenly Amber remembered she had taken a picture with Miles, she quickly brought out her camera from her purse and pressed the button to view the last picture taken. There she was smiling but Miles wasn’t there beside her, just a glowing orb of light.
